Obituary

Samuel J. Caterbone, 96, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Born in Lancaster to the late John and Catherine Caterbone, Sam lived a life rooted in hard work, service, and deep devotion to his family and faith.

A proud veteran, Sam served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippines. After returning home, he took over the family business and faithfully operated Sam Caterbone Refuse Service for over 60 years, becoming a well-known and respected figure in the community.

Sam was married to the love of his life, Joanne Jane Caterbone, for 63 years until her passing in 2015. Together they shared a passion for cooking, with Sam holding a degree in culinary arts. He was happiest preparing meals for his loved ones and was known for his storytelling, especially tales from growing up during the Great Depression or his travels—most memorably his two trips to Italy, which connected him to his heritage.

A lifelong Lancaster resident, Sam was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where he worshipped faithfully. He was also a member and usher at Church of God in Landisville. Sam was an active member of American Legion Post 34, the VFW in Lititz, and the American Italian Club in Lancaster.

He is survived by his loving children: Elizabeth Keeports (Bobby), Marycathrine Clark, Rosemarie Hoffman, Joanne Kraybill (James "Fats"), and Samuel Caterbone. He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Millie Jo Miller (Robert), and his beloved cat, Lucy. In addition to his parents and wife, Sam was preceded in death by his siblings Joseph Caterbone and Marion Caterbone, as well as infant siblings Marion and John.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange Street, Lancaster. A visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Cemetery. Please omit flowers, donations can be made to the local VA or Hospice and Community Care at www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org .

Sam's legacy of strength, kindness, and unwavering faith will live on through all who knew and loved him.
