Obituary

Sadie C. Hosan, 90, of The Long Community at Highland, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at home. Born in Lancaster, PA, the daughter of the late Michael J. and Christina (Nichalou) Mastros. She was married to Valentine W. Hosan for over 43 years.

A graduate of the Willow Street Vo-Tech Licensed Practical Nursing School and trained at the Lancaster General Hospital, she worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and did private duty care in Lancaster City and County. As an LNP she was the recipient of the Elizabeth K. Wohr LPN Memorial Scholarship in 1969.

In 1975, she opened an Adult Day Care Center in her home where nurses came from the St. Joseph Hospital to observe the operation and later opened an Adult Care Center in the hospital. In 1977, she was a Medical Charge nurse at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster.

Sadie was a life member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where she served on the Parish Council, Board of Elders, as a Sunday school teacher, and volunteered at the annual Greek Bazaar and in the church library. She was a long time member of the Daughters of Penelope where she held every office of the organization. In 1977, Sadie was named Daughter of the Year for her accomplishments and was a member of Philoptochos Society, Pan Coan Society, the Lancaster Silver Threads and Twalkers of Park City. Her father owned the former Mastros Café and Grocery for many years on the corner of Water and Prince Streets.

In her earlier years, she was a Cub Scout den mother and a brownie leader. For 20 years she and her husband collected apples from fruit farms for the annual Crop Walk and volunteered with the Red Cross and the United Way.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her children, William M. Nies, husband of Evelyn of Lititz, Christina E. Mumma, of Lancaster and a sister, Mary Arvanitis of Lancaster, and various grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Sophie Sturgis, Catherine Pavlides and three brothers, James, George and Chris Mastros.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 10:30AM from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA with Rev. Alexander Gousettis officiating. A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 9:30-10:30AM. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park.
