Roy R. Horst, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Landis Homes Retirement Community. Born in Blue Ball, he was the son of the late Harry S. and Elizabeth (Rutt) Horst. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris J. Horst.
His career included working as a farmer in Lancaster and York counties as well as a carpenter, contractor, and builder in Tampa, Florida.
When residing in Florida, he was the founder and director of Lakewood Retreat. He helped build North Tampa Christian Fellowship, where he was a board member. He loved to sing, and was a song leader at church as well as a Sunday school teacher. After moving to Lancaster, he became a member of Millport Mennonite Church. He enjoyed model railroading and bike riding. His love for biking inspired many of his family members, who now also share in this passion.
Roy was a gentleman and friend to all. He was a man who had few critics.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: G. Marlin Horst, husband of C. Jean of Bird-In-Hand, Lois E. Kennedy, wife of Larry of Reston, VA, David R. Horst, husband of Cherie of Springfield, MO, Joyce A. Rusin, wife of Jerry of Dublin, OH, Mark A. Horst, husband of Jill of Valrico, FL; brother Lloyd R. Horst, husband of Elverta, of Harrisonburg, VA, sister June E. Forry, wife of Charlie of Garner, NC, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Edith Hollinger and her husband Lloyd.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, July 6 from 2-4PM at Landis Homes Retirement Community in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Rd, Lititz, PA 17543. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 7 at 3PM at Millport Mennonite Church, 820 Log Cabin Rd, Leola, PA 17540 with Rev. Clyde Hollinger officiating. A viewing will be held the hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Millport Mennonite Church Cemetery.
