Obituary

Robert D. Weitzel, 87, of Lancaster was surrounded by loved ones when he passed away on September 21, 2024, after a long and fulfilling life.

Robert was born on March 1, 1937. After graduating from J.P. McCaskey High School, he joined the Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant stationed in Germany.

Following the Air Force, Robert was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service where he received the Gold Service Award in recognition of his 35 years of loyal service.

Robert married the love of his life, Caroline (Horn) in 1956. Robert loved sharing the story of how he met Caroline when she cared for him as a candy striper following a motorcycle accident. During their marriage, Robert and Caroline enjoyed cruising, camping, bowling, snowmobiling, and playing pinochle. Together they raised two wonderful daughters, Christine (Richard, Jr.) Seroski and Sharon (Charles) Rineer. Robert was a devoted father and father-in-law.

Robert was the world's greatest "Paps" to Jessica Dull, Kristina (Adam) Dugan, Julie (Colin) Burke, Richard, III (Heather) Seroski, Matthew Rineer, and Missy Furnier. He was a great-grandfather of 11.

Robert could light up a room and he was loved by many. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at Camp Sweet Lord in Potter County, spending time at "the club", cheering for Penn State and the Dallas Cowboys, attending gatherings with the Postal Service "lunch gang", vacationing in Myrtle Beach, eating seafood, watching Law & Order, playing cards, and going to the casino.

Robert was a lifetime member at the Riverside Camping Association, VFW, and American Legion and he was an Honorary Member of the USO in Washington, DC.

While our hearts mourn for his loss, we find comfort in knowing Robert is at peace and he is now with his wife, who he missed fiercely.

Robert was proceeded in death by his parents Beatrice (Schaffer) and Chick Caldwell and Byron W. Weitzel, Sr. In addition to his family listed above, he is survived by his brother, Byron Weitzel, Jr., extended family and long-time friends.

Robert's family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at a memorial ceremony on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 beginning at 2 PM. The family will receive guests from 1 PM until the service. Interment to follow at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Robert requested donations be made to his favorite charity, Paralyzed Veterans of America , and to Hospice of Central PA .
