Obituary

Richard R. Pugh, 85, of Lancaster, died on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Born in Somerset, Richard was the son of the late Richard E. and Pearl M. (Freidline) Pugh. On September 20, 1953, he married Phyllis J. (Smith) Pugh at St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, Johnstown, PA. After 58 years of marriage, Phyllis passed away on July 20, 2012. Richard graduated from Somerset High School in 1947. During his high school years he participated in the Senior High Band, as a drummer, and various school sports programs. Following high school he continued to participate on various sports teams: he was a member of the VFW and American Legion Baseball team, the Somerset County Leagues, the Ferndale Fire Company, Johnstown City League, and the National Guard Basketball League, Company C, Somerset. He also continued playing in orchestra and dance bands. In 1948, Richard joined the PA National Guard in Somerset and was called to active duty in September of 1950, after being sent to radio school at Southeastern Signal Corp School for Radio and Code, he became the personal radio operator for Major General Henry Fluck, who later became Commander General of Pennsylvania 28th Division. During his enlistment, he was also a drummer in the 110th Infantry Band. Following his discharge, Richard worked in the printing industry at several newspapers as a Master Color Engraver for Letterpress and Offset Printing. In 1967 he began working for Intelligencer Printing Company, Lancaster and took early retirement from there in 1985. Richard served as a baseball coach for the East Petersburg Youth League. He enjoyed all Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Pirates and Penguins. He was an avid golfer, photographer and played the electric keyboard. He was an Amateur Radio Operator W3WGJ and won 1st place in a world-wide contest for Design of Radio Receivers in 1954, sponsored by the Amateur Radio and National Company, Inc. Richard is survived by 3 children: Linda A. Silverman, wife of Paul, of Dover, DE, Leslie A. Protokowicz, wife of Terri, of Bel Air, MD, and R. Russell Pugh, husband of Holly, of Lancaster. 5 grandchildren: Samantha Rodier, Laura Cooper, Andrew Silverman, Hannah and Evan Pugh. 4 great-grandchildren: Mackenzie and Chase Cooper, and Harriet and Carter Rodier. Memorial services for Richard will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Longenecker Reformed Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard's name may be made to Foundation Fighting Blindness, 7168 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, MD 21046.
