Obituary

Richard D. Pindell, was born Feb 11, 1926, and died November 4, 2008. He resided at Willow Valley Lakes Manor and had lived in Manheim from 1935 to 1942. He served in the Marines aboard the USS Iowa during WWII. He entered the Army as a 2 nd LT in 1949 and served more than 21 years as an Intelligence Officer in Germany, Iceland, and Vietnam. He served several tours as an Instructor at the Intelligence School and as the Intelligence Instructor at the Transportation School. His final tour was as the Commander of the Intelligence Unit headquartered in Philadelphia from whence he retired as a LT. Colonel in 1970. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for service in Vietnam. Other decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medal, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

After retirement from the Army, he established the Postal Police Unit in Philadelphia as the pilot program for the Postal Inspection Service with units following in major cities nationwide. His education included a B.A. degree from the University of Maryland.

He was a long time Mason and visited several lodges in Lancaster County. He transferred membership to Manheim Lodge in 2002.

Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Joan Kane Pindell, daughter, Victoria Honeywell and sons Jerome and Timothy, seven grandchildren and a brother Walter.

Funeral Services will be held at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King Street, Lancaster on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 11:00AM. Interment will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA at 1:30PM.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10-11AM.  Please omit flowers.
