Dr. Paul L. West, 70, passed away at his Lancaster home on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Born in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Melvin and Genevieve Cora (Embly) West. Paul and his wife Lillie (Souders) West celebrated for 49 years of marriage on August 9th. A 1966 graduate of Waynesboro Area High School, he served in the US Air Force at Karamursel Joint Base in Turkey with TUSLOG DET 94 during the Vietnam War. Dr. West completed his bachelor's and master's degrees at Shippensburg University and his doctorate in counselor education from Virginia Tech in 1992. Dr. West taught at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. He was a tenured professor at Alvernia College in the Psychology Department and also the owner and licensed practitioner for Advanced Counseling and Research Service in Lancaster. Professional accomplishments and memberships included: past president and treasurer of the PA Counseling Association, 35-year member of the American Counseling Association, appointed to serve 4 years on the PA State Board of Psychology, president of the International Association of Addictions & Offender Counselors, and he presented at state and national conferences and published numerous works. In his leisure Dr. West enjoyed deer hunting and traveling to Cancun, and he was well known for playing 60's and 70's pop and folk music on his hollow body guitar. In addition to his loving wife Lillie, Dr. West is survived by their son Jeremy Paul West, husband of Michelle Owen West of Arlington, VA, and two sisters, Sally Weagley, wife of Gene and Danna Thorsen, both of Waynesboro. His brothers Larry, Barry and Lynn preceded Dr. West in death. A first viewing will take place 9:30-10:30 AM, followed by the funeral at 10:30 AM, Saturday, Oct. 27th at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 North George St., Millersville, PA 17551. A second viewing will take place 1-2 PM, followed by the funeral at 2 PM, Sunday Oct 28th at the Groves-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
