Obituary

Nancy S. Wellendorf of Lancaster, PA passed away on Monday March 5, 2018 at the Hospice Center. She was the wife of James A. Wellendorf. They were married 50 years. Born on September 29, 1942, she was the daughter of Conrad and Irma (Dennis) Barger. Her father served as an officer in the US Navy for 31 years. As a result, Nancy grew-up traveling to and living in many destinations in the United States, South America and the Far East. In 1960 Nancy graduated from Hermitage High School in Richmond, Virginia. She earned a BA in Elementary Education from Lynchburg College in 1964.Later in her career she worked on her Masters in Education at the Pennsylvania Sate University Extension in Harrisburg, PA. In the summer of 1966 she was in Germany preparing to teach USArmy dependents when she met James A. Wellendorf, a Captain in the USArmy Military Police. They were married in Pirmasens, Germany in 1967. Nancy and James have one daughter, Susan M. Plucker who now lives in Roswell, GA. She is married to Jeffrey Jaco Plucker. They have two sons, Jacob and Alex. Nancy is survived by two sisters; Carol M. Barger of Dallas, TX who is married to William Elliott and Ellen Lewis of Arlington, VA who is married to Robert Lewis. She is also survived by her brother, Conrad (Bud) Barger who lives in Nashville, TN with his wife Carol Ann Barger. She is survived by her sister-in–law, Ann Stellings of Garner, NC and her partner Ron Plank. Teaching young children was a profession that brought great joy into Nancy's life. She taught for 33 years. After graduating from college, Nancy taught one year in Virginia, one year in Rhode Island, two years in Germany and one year in Harrisburg PA. For the next 28 years she taught second grade for the Hempfield School District at the Landisville Elementary Schools. After she retired she volunteered as a Board Member of the Hempfield Education Foundation. She made a profound impact on the lives of a countless number of her students. Many children, parents and other educators consider her to be the best teacher they ever had or knew. Nancy's interests included traveling, reading, the theater, tennis, golf, swimming and horseback riding. She loved raising flowers. Orchids were her favorites. Her husband, Jim, brought her flowers every week of their marriage. In lieu of flowers, Nancy asked you to make a contribution to a charity or cause that you care deeply about.
