Obituary

Nancy Jane (Shupp) Rohrer, age 71, of East Petersburg, having fought the good fight, reached her earthly journey's end on March 8th, 2017 in her home with her husband and daughters by her side.

A life-long resident of Lancaster County, Nancy was born on April 14th, 1945, to the late Ralph and Evelyn (Heisey) Shupp. She lived her entire married life on an ancestral farm in East Petersburg with Tobias H. Rohrer, her husband of 48 years, who survives her. Home and family were a priority for Nancy as evidenced by the love she shared with her husband and the deeply-seated joy she received through her close relationship with her two daughters, Elizabeth Rohrer of East Petersburg and Mary Neville, wife of Troy Neville of Lancaster. In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by the following sisters and brothers: Barbara Shupp, Lancaster; Susan, wife of Michael Morrow of Palmyra; David Shupp, Pinehurst, North Carolina; and Michael Shupp, husband of Wendy (Ginder), Denver; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Nancy was a 1963 graduate of Cocalico High School. After graduation, her compassion for others led her to choose a career in nursing. In 1966 she graduated from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing where she received the "Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing and Bedside Care." Through the years, she continued her formal nursing education and graduated summa cum laude from Lebanon Valley College In 1984 with a Bachelor's degree in nursing. Nancy later received a certification in school nursing from Millersville University In 1989. Her final public nursing practice was as a school nurse in both the Hempfield and Conestoga Valley school districts.

Cultivating her spirituality was of great Importance to Nancy. Originally baptized into the Church of the Brethren, she later shared her spiritual gifts at Trinity United Church of Christ in East Petersburg after her marriage to Tobias in 1968. At Trinity she displayed her faith and encouraging nature through activities like teaching church school, serving on the Altar Guild, participating in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and serving as a spiritual friend to Confirmands. Nancy also practiced her commitment to helping and giving to others by making hundreds of comfort pillows over the years for the ill and the home-bound. A special joy for Nancy was the spiritual growth and direction she received through her participation in activities at the Kairos School of Spiritual Formation at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville. She also greatly enjoyed tending her flowers and making her famous chocolate chip cookies.

Services will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 2340 State Rd, East Petersburg, PA on Saturday, April 22 at 2PM with Pastor Chris Rankin officiating. A private family interment will be in East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery.
