Obituary

Nancy Joan "Jo" Horner, 83, of Lancaster, Pa, passed away at Brethren Village on January 6, 2009 following a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Jack B. Horner for 63 years.

Jo was born in Elizabethtown on June 21, 1925 to Ralph W. and Elizabeth D. Schlosser. Her father, a former President of Elizabethtown College, was also Professor of English for many years. She was a 1943 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. She attended Juniata College before marrying Jack Horner in 1945, while he was in the US Air Force. Jack and Jo celebrated their 63 wedding anniversary in 2008.

Jo was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren.

Jo was a member of the Elizabethtown Hughes Society during the early years of her marriage; Jo turned her community service talents to helping abused children later in life. Her devoted volunteer work with CONTACT during the 80's earned her the respect of many. In May, 1988, she was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service.

Jo was known for her flair for interior decorating and her gourmet cooking. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and played bridge. She was an avid golfer for many years, playing in many Central Pennsylvania women's golf league tournaments representing Conestoga Country Club, winning her share! She also loved dogs and had many throughout her life.

Jo was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was dearly loved by her family and many friends and will be missed.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their daughter, Deborah G. Horner of Fairbanks, Alaska, her elder brother, Dr. David E. Schlosser of Mt. Joy, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as brother Galen and sister Floy Hiestand.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place from the Brethren Village Chapel on Friday, January 9, 2009 at 2:30pm with Rev. Levi Ziegler officiating. Relatives and friends may pay their respects following the service. Interment will be private at Mt. Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown.
