At the age of 22 Miles came to the mainland for aviation training. During WWII, he served in the US Navy as an aviation mechanic. An avid reader and lifetime learner, Miles moved to Pennsylvania in retirement and earned a BA in English, graduating cum laude from Millersville University at the age of 74. Thereafter, he was a substitute teacher in the Lancaster County schools.

One of his favorite pastimes was walking in the sunshine while donning his signature hat. Never without a pen, Miles enjoyed writing poems and quips.
