Obituary

Mildred H. Devenney, 94, of Lancaster passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 25 th at Landis Homes, Lititz, PA surrounded by her family. She was born in Lancaster, PA, the only daughter of the late Amos and Alverta Hitz, on December 15, 1916. Millie married the late Richard C. Devenney in 1947 and they enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2001.

She will be sadly missed, and lovingly remembered, by her son Robert H. Devenney, and his wife Linda, her daughter Deborah Spinney, and her husband William, her daughter Constance Hills, and her husband Richard, and her son James Devenney and his wife Ruth. She will also be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Robert C. Devenney, and his wife Megan, Wade Devenney, Kyle Devenney, Laura Nelson and her husband Kevin, Karen McAnanama and her husband Glenn, John Devenney and Thomas Devenney. As well as her great grandchildren: Jake Devenney, Rachel Devenney, Will Devenney, Drew Devenney, Caroline Nelson, Matthew Nelson, Avery McAnanama and Reid McAnanama.

She loved spending vacations with her family and friends in Cape May, New Jersey. For more than 30 years she hosted a growing family of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren during these annual trips to the beach which now fill us with so many wonderful memories. Our mother also gracefully hosted all the holiday family dinners which never seemed to have a glitch. She also loved attending her children's and grandchildren's many sporting events and other extracurricular activities.

Millie and her husband traveled extensively throughout the States and abroad, especially after their retirement. Many of their domestic vacations involved cross-country auto trips with their grandchildren who really got to see the USA and who continue to retell stories of life on the road with their grandparents. She and Richard were also avid card players who enjoyed couples bridge and gin competitions.

Millie was a graduate of Lancaster's Girls High and was a long time employee of the Murray Insurance Agency. She was an active member of her church, St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a 25 year volunteer with the Red Cross at Lancaster General Hospital. In addition she was an active member of the Iris Club where she was a past president from 1986-88.

Services will be held at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA on Thursday, December 30 th at 2:30p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Martha B Sheaffer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service beginning at 1:30p.m. A reception will be held for all of her family and friends at 3:30pm at the Conestoga Country Club.

The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Landis Homes for the kind, respectful and loving care that they gave to Millie over the last five and a half years and to Hospice of Lancaster County which supplied welcome comfort during the past weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to either of the following: The Caring Fund, Landis Homes, 1001 E.
