Michael Oehrlein, 66, of 6433 Lincoln Court, East Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, October 9 th after a very brave and heroic 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Mount Vernon, NY, he has been a resident of Lancaster County for over 25 years. He was the son of the late Herbert J. and Antoinette Davis Oehrlein. He was the husband of Loretta Gumbert Oehrlein, they were married, July 9, 1988. He was self employed in the health insurance industry and also previously worked as head of food services at Franklin and Marshall College where he also coached the men's baseball team from 1980-1983. He was also the founder of the Lancaster Malt Brewing Company. Mike spent three years in the Navy as a sonarman serving on the Cuban blockade, aboard the USS Bigelow. As a result, he was a prolific reader of military history books. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter as well as a fanatic golfer and extremely dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta and three bothers: Peter of Riverdale, NY, Paul of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Jack of Honolulu, HI, as well as his sister, Gretchen Oehrlein Dwyer of Norwich, VT. He was the father of four children: Scott of Chester, NJ, husband of Molly, Fred of Coatesville, PA, husband of Justine, Nichele Oehrlein Palermo of Lititz, PA, wife of Chris, and Betsy Oehrlein Heim of Lancaster, PA, wife of Christian. He was the grandfather to eight grandchildren: Libby and Allison of Chester, NJ, Anna and Otto of Coatesville, PA, Taylor and Mallory of Lititz, PA and Kieran and Margaret of Lancaster, PA, and uncle to nieces and nephews; Jonathan, Julia, Margaret Beatrice, Jennifer Jade, Bindi, Marla, Marisa, Doug, Keisha, Stacey, Jayme, Stephanie and Colleen.
Friends may pay their respects to the family at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Chapel at 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 from 6-8 PM followed by a time of sharing. Mike will be laid to rest at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 10:30AM on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
