Michael A. Mastromatteo, 89, of Manheim, PA, formerly of Lancaster, PA, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at his cottage at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Lititz PA he was the son of the late Michael A. and Angelina (DiNunzio) Mastromatteo. He was the husband of Rosa T. (Rose/Pugliese) Mastromatteo and they were married in 2008. Mike is preceded in death by his first wife, the late Catherine L. (Lombardo) Mastromatteo who passed in 2001.
Mike was a US Navy veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific campaign on board the USS St. Paul. His ship was docked beside the USS Missouri when Japan surrendered and signed the peace treaty. Mike was a hairstylist for 61 years and was the owner of Michael's Grandview Salon in Grandview Heights. He was also a Bailiff in Lancaster County Courthouse for Judge Kenderdine for 11 years. Mike was a member of St. Richard CC in Manheim and was a charter member of St. Leo the Great CC where he was an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6810 and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Assembly. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Secular Franciscan Order (OFS). He was a member of the Lancaster Elks, Lodge #134. Mike was a past Trustee, Elk of the Year 2001 and past chairman of the bowling league. He was a former member of the Serra Club. Mike was proud of his Italian heritage and was the past president of the Lancaster Italian Culture Society and was a member of the former Italian American Citizens Club which his father helped establish. Mike was a member of the Pleasant View Railroad Club. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, gardening and opera. He was an active member of the Lancaster Bocce League and played for several years on the Scostamati team with sons George and Jim. Family was very important to Mike and he loved spending time with all his family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sons: Michael A. Mastromatteo III (Catherine) of Lenexa, Kansas, George Mastromatteo (Linda) of Lancaster, James E. Mastromatteo (Diane) of Lancaster; stepsons: Dominic Pugliese (Candy), of Lancaster, Leonard Pugliese partner of Barry Freidly, of Landisville, PA, Anthony P Pugliese, (Nancy) of Shrewsbury, Greg Pugliese, of Lititz, (companion of Patty Mazzei), John M. Pugliese (Helen), of Lancaster; 6 granddaughters: Lisa, Gina, Jodie, Lindsay, Brooke and Jessy; 7 step-grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sister Vivian Mastromatteo ,C.S.C. Kensington.MD. and Ida Maio, Omaha, NB. Mike was one of 12 children and he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters: Pasquale, Nicholas, Richard, Salvatore, Edward, Martha Benner, Mary Case, Gilda Henry and Frances Maio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 10am from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601. A visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6-8PM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 and from 9-10am on Tuesday at the church. The Elks will hold a service at 5:50pm and the Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:45 PM on Monday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be held at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or St. Richards, 110 N Oak St, Manheim, PA 17545 in his memory.
