Mary L. Shawkey, 73, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully in Philadelphia on Sunday, August 11, 2013. She was the wife of Guy A. Shawkey, with whom she would have celebrated 51 years of marriage this Sunday, August 18th. Born in Buffalo, NY, Mary was the daughter of the late Richard and Jane Thornton Johnson, and was a descendant of Matthew Thornton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, earning a BS in Home Economics; and taught school for 20 ½ years in Buffalo, NY, Detroit, MI and retired in 2000 from the School District of Lancaster. In Lancaster, Mary taught Home Economics & Marriage and Family Relationships; and while at McCaskey H.S., worked cooperatively to establish & then coordinate McCaskey's student Conflict Resolution Program. She also was an active member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church serving on the church Library committee & the pre-school reading program. Mary was a member and an officer of the Women's Garden Club of Lancaster County; and enjoyed the company of her "Aqua Friends" as they exercised at Universal Athletic Club. She enjoyed gardening, music, cooking, traveling and, above all, Mary enjoyed spending time with her 7 grandchildren for whom she ran her "Camp Grandma" program each summer. In addition to her husband, Guy, Mary is survived by her children: Scott C. married to Anne of McLean, VA, Gregory G. married to Valerie of Ephrata, and Kimberly A. married to Lucian Contino of Lancaster; her seven grandchildren: Carrie, Emily, Julia, Michael, Rachel, Gabrielle and Sam; and by her brother, R. Thomas Johnson of Missoula, Montana. Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother & mother-in-law. She was a compassionate and joyful lady who touched the lives and became a dear friend to many people. Mary will always be missed. Friends will be received on August 21, 2013 from 1:30-2:30PM at St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 2:30PM. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
