Obituary

Mary Ann Hughes, formerly of Lancaster, went to her Heavenly Home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on February 19th, 2025.

Born in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of Henry and Myrtle Hoppe and the wife of David G. Hughes for 56 years.

Mary Ann was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in the Nursery, attended the Women's Bible Study, sang in the choir, helped care for the cemetery garden, and was the song leader for the Good News Club at Nitrauer School.

She was a graduate of Glen Ridge High School in NJ in 1959, and Trenton State Teachers' College in 1963. She taught 2nd grade and Kindergarten at St. Cloud School, W. Orange, NJ. After her children were all in school, she taught Kindergarten at Brookdale Christian School in Bloomfield, NJ. After retirement, she and David moved to their summer home in Speculator, NY in the Adirondack Mountains. There, she helped run a daycare and became the Pre-K teacher at Lake Pleasant Central School, retiring in 2012.

In the past, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Pioneer Girls leader, on the board of Concerned Persons for Adoption, and was the newsletter editor for Mothers of Twins of Essex County, NJ. In retirement in Speculator, she ran the Craft Shop at Camp of the Woods for ten years where she also regularly volunteered. In addition, she was a member of the Garden Club and volunteered at the TWIGS Treasures Thrift Shop.

Mary Ann's hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, counted cross stitch, gardening, scrapbooking and cross-country skiing.

Mary Ann is survived by 2 children: Michelle Stark, of Newark, DE, David Hughes and his wife Heather, of Newark, DE as well as her daughter-in-law, Melissa Hughes of Speculator, NY. There are also 6 grandchildren: Mark James Stark, Myles, Ted and Anna Kate and Joshua and Lillian Hughes.

Mary Ann was predeceased by her son, Theodore Hugh Hughes, her husband, David Hughes and her son, Mark Hughes. She is now with them in Glory!

The viewing will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, from 11 AM – 12 PM at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Interment will follow at Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601, then there will be a memorial service at 1 PM in the church. The family will receive guests at the church at a luncheon immediately following the service.
