Louise Baugher Black, formerly of Elizabethtown, died on May 19, 2014, at Brethren Village, where she had resided since May 2000. Born on November 12, 1925, she was the daughter of the late A.C. and Ella Booz Baugher, both of Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle E. Black, Jr., who died on April 15, 2005. Surviving are her children: Alan C. Black of Elizabethtown, husband of Linda Widmaier; Phyllis Black MacDonald of Baltimore, MD, wife of the late Russell C. MacDonald; Merle E. Black III of Cincinnati, OH, husband of Suzanne Byers Black; Carolyn Black-Sotir of Baltimore, wife of Michael A. Sotir; and Barbara J. Black of Saratoga Springs, NY, wife of James A. Hill. She is survived by ten grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her two sisters""Kathleen Baugher Bryer, wife of C. John Bryer of Gap, and Dorothy Baugher Ebersole, wife of Mark C. Ebersole""preceded her in death. She earned a bachelor's degree from Elizabethtown College in 1946 and a master's degree from Temple University in 1965. She co-authored English texts for Continental Press and taught English in the public schools before joining the English faculty of Elizabethtown College in 1968 as the Clinical Professor of English. Active in collegiate and community affairs, she served as president and founding member of the Elizabethtown College Auxiliary; president of the Elizabethtown Rotary Ann Club; Moderator, Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren; fund-raiser for the Heritage House Museum; Board Member and Secretary of the State Board of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and founder and past producer of the Christmas biennial production of Handel's Messiah, presented as a benefit for the Winters Heritage House Museum. She performed as an actress in numerous television commercials, voice-overs, and movies in the Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington areas. A Celebration of Life service for family and friends will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, May 31 at the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, located at 777 South Mount Joy Street in Elizabethtown. There will be a reception following the service to which everyone is invited. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, contributions in her memory can be made to the A. C. Baugher Endowed Chair for Chemistry at Elizabethtown College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
