Lois Rae Neal Schaller, 92, passed away on January 7, 2011 at Willow Valley Retirement Community. She was born in St. Louis, MO just before the end of the Great War. When WWII began, Lois enlisted and became a Staff Sargeant in the Women's Air Force. She was with the first group of women sent overseas and was stationed at Elveden Hall in England at the Third Division 8th Air Force headquarters. While serving there, she met Donald Carl Schaller and they were married at St. Mary's Church in Thetford, England in October 1944. She was sent back to the United States with an honorable discharge while pregnant with their first son, Donald Jr.
At the end of the war, they settled in Lancaster where they raised their family. Lois was very active in the PEO Sisterhood, Meals on Wheels, the First United Methodist Church of Millersville and many other civic organizations.
She had a great love of traveling and family. She was active until the end, just having returned from a holiday visit to her daughter and family in Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel (Reider) Neal, sister Doras M. Snarr and husband Donald C. who passed away in 1991. She is survived by her four children, Donald C. (Sylvia) of Furlong, PA, Robert N. (Nan) of Burlington, NC., Doras A. Ladd (John) of Scottsdale, AZ and Ellen K. (Lesley) of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Marc D. Schaller (Allyson), Christopher N. Schaller (Cindy), Brian A. Schaller (Elizabeth), Matthew Schaller, Sarah Schaller, Ashley Ladd and Brittany Ladd and 9 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 12noon from the First United Methodist Church of Millersville 121 N. George St. Millersville, PA 17551 with The Rev. John Laughlin officiating. A viewing will be held at the church from 10am-12noon on Tuesday. Interment will be on Wednesday at 11:30am at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Millersville.
