Obituary

Lloyd H. Ross, 75, passed over into the loving arms of Christ his Savior on November 6, 2023. He was the son of Homer C Ross and Ruth Hettes Ross. Lloyd was born on August 25, 1948 in Nicholson, PA and grew up in Clifford, PA.

Lloyd met his wife, Joan, at Susquehanna University. In June they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Lloyd graduated from Susquehanna University with a B.S. in Music Education in 1970. He completed his MMEd degree at West Chester University in 1974. He did postgraduate work at Peabody Conservatory (MD), Berklee College of Music (MA), University of Delaware, Ithaca University (NY), and Villanova University (PA).

Lloyd was Director of Bands at Newark High School (Delaware) for 34 years. His program was extensive and included marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, and two jazz ensembles. In later years the spring music trips included the orchestra and the choirs. Lloyd believed that music was a window to the soul. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor to his students and friends. Many of Lloyd's students went on to be music teachers and/or professional performers across the nation. In addition to his involvement with the Newark Band, Lloyd directed the First State Symphonic Band from 1978-1988.

After his retirement Lloyd worked for the University of Delaware music department as a Student Teacher Supervisor from 2005-2016. He also developed a woodworking hobby, making over 400 pieces of furniture over a ten year period.

While living in Newark, Lloyd was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Wilmington, DE. After moving to Lancaster in 2007 he later became a member of Calvary Church.

In addition to his wife, Joan, Lloyd is survived by his children, Sharon Pickersgill (Webb) of Louisville, CO, and Jeffrey Ross of Los Angeles, CA; 3 grandchildren, Apollo, Trinity, and Zion Pickersgill; a sister, Joan Carlson, of Beverly MA; and two brothers, John Ross (Carol) of Ulster, PA, and Erving Ross (Nancy) of Hallstead, PA.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd, Lancaster, PA on November 16 at 3pm. Visitation will begin at 2pm. Burial will be private.
