Lloyd H. Lawrence, Sr., 92, of Lancaster, passed away at Moravian Manor Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Born in Coatesville, PA, Lloyd was the son of the late Edward and Mary E. (Beinhauer) Lawrence. He was the husband of Shirley (Kennedy) Lawrence, to whom he was married 37 years.
Lloyd graduated from the North Dakota State University to prepare himself for the US Navy.
Lloyd served in the US Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Princeton, USS Requisite Minesweeper and USS Broadwater. He was a Water Tender for 5 years, turning salt water into fresh water.
He retired from Lukens Steel Co., where he worked as a machinist for 30 years. After Lukens, he became Sub District Director for 17 years with United Steel Workers of America. He was also Union President at Lukens Steel Co. for 8 years.
Lloyd was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Lloyd served on the Board of Directors at Brandywine Hospital. He enjoyed golfing, going to horse racing tracks, and loved all sports. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be missed by many of his golfing buddies at Olde Hickory.
In addition to his wife, Lloyd is survived by his children, Dorothy Hackman, wife of Frank, of Cochranville, Lloyd Lawrence, Jr., husband of Patricia, of Christiana, and Charles Lawrence, husband of Susan, of Nevato, CA, grandchildren, Brian, Christopher, and Matthew Lawrence, 4 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, and step-daughter, Susan Kiger, of St. Petersburg, FL. In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Crystal Holcomb, 4 sisters, and 2 brothers.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster, PA. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 12:15PM. Visitation will take place at the church from 11:15AM-12:15PM. Private interment will take place in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or Hospice & Community Care 685 Good Drive PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604.
