Leonard S. Sloane, 95, of Lancaster, passed away at the Mennonite Home on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. He was born in Bayonne, NJ to the late Joseph and Stella Sokolowski. Leonard and his wife Carmela J. "Millie" Pelosi Sloane were married for 70 years last August 31st.
He was Valedictorian at Bayonne Technical High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Leonard interrupted his studies to voluntarily serve in the US Army Air Corps with the 84th Bomb Squadron, 47th Bomb Group during WWII. Following the war, Leonard completed his engineering studies and worked for RCA as a mechanical engineer for over 30 years.
Leonard was a member and longtime usher at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. He was a founding member and active volunteer of the Manheim Township Ambulance Association and served on the Manheim Township Zoning Board. He enjoyed maintaining his yard and home and was an exceptional woodworker. A true engineer, Leonard possessed the skills to repair everything around the home.
In addition to his loving wife Millie, Leonard is survived by their daughters, Mary Jean, wife of Philip Liller of Lancaster and Ellen Sloane, wife of Richard Wirth of Lititz; 5 grandchildren, Christopher Liller, husband of Sabrina, Joseph Liller, husband of Carolyn, Anna Geller, wife of Joshua, Joel Knutson, husband of Katerina Drisi and Paul Knutson; 8 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Marilyn Sloan of Reading and several nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Henry Sloan.
A viewing will take place from 10 to 11 AM, followed by the Mass at 11 AM with Rev. Daniel F.X. Powell as Celebrant, on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, PA 17601. Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or to the Mennonite Home: Promise Partners Continuing Care Fund, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
