Obituary

Leonard "Len" Gathercole, 96,of Maryland formerly of Willow Street, PA passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Born in Liverpool, England he was the son of the late Olive Beatrice Rose (Standley) and Ernest Gathercole. He was the beloved husband to Diane Emily (Merritt) for over 54 years.

Professionally, Len was a stalwart in the field of newspaper printing press engineering, dedicating over three decades of his life to the craft. His expertise and commitment were evident throughout his tenure at the Goss Printing Press Company, where his contributions were invaluable until his retirement in 1994.

A devoted member of the West Willow United Methodist Church, Len's faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him in his actions and relationships. Outside of his professional pursuits, Len found immense pleasure in a diverse range of hobbies and interests. His love for travel allowed him to explore new cultures and historical sites, fueling his passion for history and genealogy. Additionally, Len was a talented artist, finding expression and creativity through painting. He also immersed himself in the intricate world of model railroading, indulging his fascination with locomotives and miniature landscapes.

One of Len's greatest joys was tending to his flower and vegetable gardens, nurturing the beauty of nature with care and dedication. His rose garden was a testament to his love for gardening and appreciation for natural beauty. Beyond his green thumb, Len enjoyed cooking, delighting in the creation of delicious meals for his loved ones.

In his family life, Len was a loving husband to Diane for over 54 years. Together, they raised a family filled with love and laughter. In addition to Diane, Len is survived by his children: Valerie C. Gathercole partner of Ian Ronald of England, Melanie D. Polkosky wife of Steven of Tennessee., Timothy L. Gathercole husband of Shannon Maryland; 5 grandchildren: Lyndsey Vaughton of England, Sydney and Sean Gathercole of Maryland, Alexander and Sophia Polkosky of Tennessee, and great-grandchild Charlie Vaughton of England who were the lights of his life, bringing him immeasurable joy and pride. Also surviving is Len's brother Ernest E. Gathercole of England. He was predeceased by his sisters Frances and Gladys.

A Celebration of Len's Life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street, PA 17584, for family and friends to come together and honor his memory. Family and friends will be received from 10AM until the time of service. The interment will be held at Conestoga Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Willow United Methodist Church, address above or the American Heart Association, www.aha.org , reflecting Len's spirit of generosity and compassion.

Len's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, his warmth, kindness, and zest for life serving as an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
