Obituary

Leo L. Herzog, Jr., 93, formerly of Williamsport, died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster. Born in Smethport, PA he was the son of the late Leo L. Sr. and Agnes Barry Herzog. Leo was married to Nancy J. Herzog for 64 years until her death in 2012. A US Army veteran of World War II, Leo served as a Tec/4 in the European Theatre where he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars and also was on the second wave to storm the beaches of Normandy, France. He was a graduate of Smethport High School and received a Bachelor's degree from Lock Haven State Teachers College and his Master's degree from Bucknell University. Leo was an educator his whole life and began his teaching career as a Social Studies teacher in the Bradford Area School district and later as assistant principal at the Floyd C. Fretz Junior high School. He continued his administrator role serving as principal for the Kane Area High School and later served as principal for the Loyalsock Jr. High School in Williamsport until his retirement. He was a member of the PA Secondary School Principal's Association where he served as vice president. Leo was an avid golfer and a huge Penn State football fan. An active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Williamsport, he served on the education committee and sang in the church choir. He also volunteered at Divine Providence hospital in Williamsport. In Lancaster, he was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Kathryn, wife of Joseph M. Lapic, Beaver Falls, PA, Susan Ann Wion, Alexandria, PA, and Cynthia Jill, wife of Dennis H. Townsend, Landisville; eight grandchildren, Christopher, husband of Amy Burkes and Steven, husband of Jeanine Burkes, all of Pittsburgh, Rachel Wion and Sarah, wife of Keith Beamer, all of Alexandria, Jill, wife of David Moniz, Ardmore, Mark Townsend , Landisville, Matthew Adams, Lititz, and Alex Townsend, Arlington, VA; five great-grandchildren, Sydney, Layne, Madilyn, Grace Burkes and Ethan Beamer; and his sister Anne McMahon, of Salisbury, CT. Leo was preceded in death by his sons-in-law William Burkes, Robert Wion and his sisters, Virginia and Eloise, and his two brothers, Richard and Robert. A Funeral Liturgy will take place 11AM Monday, December 8, 2014, with a Visitation from 10:30 to 11AM, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601 with Rev. Peter I. Hahn as Celebrant. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 2PM with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Leo's memory may be made to the Mennonite Home Benevolent Fund, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
