Lawrence "Larry" Corcoran of Lancaster, PA died peacefully Sunday, February 10, 2013 surrounded by his family. He had been under a doctor's care for coronary heart disease since 1977 when he underwent his first of three such bypass operations.
Larry was born in Boston, MA and raised in Rockland, MA, the son of the late Lawrence P. and Helen J. (Murphy) Corcoran. He was the husband of Donna M. (Hanley) Corcoran of Lancaster. He graduated from Rockland High School, Marianapolis Academy in Thompson, CT, and Brown University in Providence RI, majoring in Classics and Philosophy. Upon graduation he was commissioned a naval officer serving on the destroyer Dennis Buckley DDC808 as a gunnery officer and ASW officer.
Upon discharge he joined the sales department at Alcoa in its headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. During the following 37 years with Alcoa he held many sales, sales management and marketing positions in Pittsburgh, Albany, NY,
East Orange, NJ, Richmond, VA, Lancaster, PA, New Canaan, CT, and Philadelphia, PA retiring in 1993 as Vice President of the Alcoa Recycling Company. During his Alcoa career he represented the company in many trade organizations in various industries and was the recipient of several awards for outstanding achievement and contributions to the growth of the company and industry.
He was a sports enthusiast, and loved following Penn State football. He excelled in basketball and baseball, and went on to Brown University where he played quarterback. He was a long time little league baseball coach in several cities, and gained the greatest satisfaction from coaching the "beginners".
He loved playing bridge and was an active member of ACBL, achieving the distinction of Silver Life Master in 2002. He also enjoyed golf and was a member of Bent Creek Country Club for 16 years. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Richmond, VA.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 55 years, Donna are four sons, and one daughter: Kevin E. Corcoran of Lake Charles, LA, Jeffrey T. Corcoran and his wife Christine of Lancaster, PA, Thomas M. Corcoran and his wife Elizabeth of Mohnton, PA, Scott F. Corcoran and his wife Denise of Blandon, PA and Mary K. McClain and her husband David of Lancaster, PA. His family was his greatest delight and he loved his 10 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter with all his heart. He is also survived by a brother, George "Uncle Buddy" Corcoran and his wife Mary of Rockland, MA. A sister Elizabeth Ann Claudette preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Thursday, February 14, 2013 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Michael Letteer as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz PA, and again one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
