Obituary

Kathryn Edith Flood died peacefully with her husband of 71 years James E. Flood at her side on December 14, 2014 at the Glen at Willow Valley Retirement Communities in Lancaster, PA at age 92. Kathryn was born October 8, 1922 to Harry C. and Grace Miller of Jenkintown, PA. A 1951 job opportunity brought the young couple to Wilmington, DE where they raised the family and enjoyed life together. April 2001 they chose a move to Willow Valley for a more relaxed life style. Always an advocate of learning, Kathryn was a pioneer in the older than average entering college age student movement. She graduated from high school at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Chestnut Hill, PA in 1940 and bravely took her first freshman class at the University of Delaware in 1956. It was a big moment in the family when she received her Bachelor of Science in Education at a scorching hot May 1961 graduation ceremony at age 39. Mrs. Flood loved teaching first grade for a 17 year career at Faulk Road Elementary and then at Forwood Elementary in the Wilmington Brandywine District. She retired in 1979 with more time for travel, square dancing, golf, bridge and docent activities at the Delaware Art Museum In addition to her beloved sister Dorothy Miller of Willow Street, PA.¬¬¬, Kathryn left behind her devoted children, Kathleen Heuser and her husband Bill, Charlottesville, VA; Janet Sells, Newport, RI; James Flood and his wife Alicia of Lebanon¬¬¬¬, TN. She so cherished her grandchildren Susan Muse and her husband Phil, Folsom, CA; Will Heuser, Bangkok, Thailand; Ryan Heuser and his wife Cara, Park City, UT; Michael Sells of Honolulu, HI. Her oldest grandson Jeffrey K. Sells predeceased her in 1987. Great grandchildren Ashley and Logan Muse, Joey and Anabel Heuser, and Princess Heuser gave her great joy because after all, more first graders were on their way. Funeral services will be private.
