Joseph Paul Sagerer, 90, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Conestoga View Nursing Home. Born in Lancaster, he was the loving husband of Jessie (Covert) Sagerer of Lancaster, to whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage in September. He was the son of the late John and Anna (Krallinger) Sagerer. During WWII Joseph served in the Navy on the Destroyer USS Halsey Powell, which was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft. He was awarded many military medals, including a Purple Heart. He had a long career as a skilled auto body technician. He enjoyed working on cars, raising fancy pigeons for showing, fishing, but most of all, spending time at family get-togethers. He also liked watching the Phillies, Flyers, and Eagles. In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his 11 children: Joseph Jr (Jean) of Elk Grove Village, IL; Michael of Lancaster; Barbara "Bunny" Sagerer of Lancaster; Brenda Fischer (David) of Lancaster; David of Lancaster; Mary Coladonato (Steve) of Lansdowne; Joan Spackman (Ed Jr.) of Reinholds; Susan Gross (Steve) of Willow Street; John (Sheila) of Lancaster; Robert (Kelly) of Boonton, NJ; and Mark of Lancaster; 20 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John J., and a granddaughter, Holly Beth Sagerer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, November 28, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster with the Rev. Allan F. Wolfe as Celebrant. Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the mass on Saturday at the church. Burial, with full military honors, will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers. Memorial contributions in Joe's memory may be made to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Project, 1117 Country Club Rd, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
