IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph R.
Fichner
July 19, 1925 – November 30, 2016
Joseph R. Fichner, 91, of Lancaster, formerly of Clark, NJ, passed away peacefully on Nov. 30, 2016. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Serafin) Fichner, to whom he was lovingly married for 69 years. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was a son of the late John and Sophie (Wojton) Fichner. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, NJ where he was named to the all-state baseball team as a centerfielder. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps as a hospital corpsman in Japan and Peleliu, Palau during WWII. Upon completion of his military service, he worked for 40 years as a quality control supervisor at The Singer Company in Elizabeth, NJ, and then for Quality Tool and Die Company in Hoboken, NJ, as a purchasing agent. He deeply loved his family, his Catholic faith, hot dogs, polka and patriotic music, and the New York Yankees. He enjoyed many travel adventures with wife, Liz, coaching Little League baseball, maintaining his grapevines, volunteering at St. Agnes Catholic Church, playing bingo, and clapping loudly at the end of a musical performance. Poppy will be greatly missed by his wife and family including son Joseph and wife Kathleen, of Howell, NJ, daughter Jane Hungarter and husband Brian, of Lancaster, three grandchildren, Kelley Tellefsen and husband Joseph, of Burlington, NJ, Joseph Fichner and wife Jennifer, of Cream Ridge, NJ, and Brian Hungarter, II of Conshohocken, as well as four great grandchildren – Skyler, Brody, Miley, and Aria. He was preceded in death by sister Julia (Fichner) Falco, and brothers Stanley and Louis. The Fichner family would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Trout Run at the Mennonite Home who provided outstanding compassionate care for Joe, the members of the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center who were like a second family to Joe, and to the courteous bus drivers at Red Rose Access who made it possible for Joe to continue to attend Mass and go out to eat (two of his most favorite things). A viewing will take place on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 3-6 PM at Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Road, Clark, NJ 07066. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 9:45 AM at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 332 Madison Hill Road, Clark, NJ 07066, with interment to follow at St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Pulaski Avenue, Sayreville, NJ 08872. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe's memory to the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar Street, PO Box 225, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
