Obituary

Joseph F. Dingman, Jr. died on July 16, 2018 at his home in Lancaster. He was 72 years old and had been ill with complications of cardiac amyloidosis for a number of months. Joe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Ives Dingman, a son Chris Dingman (Zaneta) of Brooklyn, NY and daughter, Betsy Braverman (Jason) of Rockville, MD. Other survivors include his mother, Caroline Eldridge (Herb) in Sarasota, FL, sister Kathy Walters (Rick) of E. Sandwich, MA and brothers Ken Dingman (Catherine) of Monroe, OR, Brian Dingman of Westborough, MA and Gary Dingman (Sharron Senter) of North Reading, MA, as well as beloved nieces and nephews. Born in Buffalo, NY, Joe spent much of his childhood in New Orleans, LA and graduated from high school in Wellesley, MA. He earned his BS, MS and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts and went on to work as a researcher for Noxell, Kodak, and Memorex, later developing his own consulting business. Joe and his wife lived for many years in San Jose, CA, where he was active as a manager and coach for youth soccer and baseball teams. After moving to Lancaster in 2014 he served as a driver for Meals on Wheels in Lititz and volunteered in the community meals program at First Reformed UCC. He continued to enjoy his passions for golf, cooking, and the Metropolitan Opera, and in the last weeks of his life he worked on a project to bring the healing sound of vibraphone music to other Hospice patients. A private memorial service will be held in Massachusetts at the convenience of the family. Memorial gifts may be made to the Dept. of Chemistry, Univ. of Massachusetts, 181 Presidents Dr., Amherst, MA 01003.
