John A. Scheffman, Jr, 89, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Springvale, York County, he was the husband of Phyllis (McDaniel) Scheffman of Lancaster, and the son of the late John A. Scheffman, Sr. and Anna Williams. John was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #543, Red Lion and the Izaak Walton League of America, and a member of the Varmint's Den in Costello, Potter County, PA. Along with his wife, John was founder and owner of Shorty Mack's, an ice cream shop on Columbia Ave., from 1959 to 1989. He loved to make ice cream as much as he enjoyed eating it. Post-retirement, he was a driver for Manheim Auto Auction for 20 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting in PA, VA, and WV and also liked to go deep-sea fishing. Of the Protestant Faith, he was an Army Veteran of WWII. In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by 3 daughters and their husbands: Belinda and Carl LeFever and Melanie and Greg McMullen, all of Lancaster; and Jennifer and Sam Martin of Dallastown; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry, and 2 sisters: Charlotte and Louise. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 AM Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz with Pastor Jay Frey officiating. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 PM Friday, July 15, 2016 at the funeral home, and again one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery, 1502 Mt. Rose Ave., York. Kindly omit flowers. Memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to American Heart/American Stroke Asso., PO Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693 or to Izaak Walton League of America, York Chapter #67, 7131 Iron Stone Hill Rd, Dallastown, PA 17313. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Lancaster General Hospital 7 North for their excellent care of John.
