Obituary

John Mongiovi, age 89 of Lancaster, died on Saturday, November 11, 2023. He was born in Cattolica Eraclea, Sicily to the late Angelo and Giuseppa Mongiovi. John immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve and settled in Lancaster with his family. He attended St. Mary's School in Lancaster, graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1954, and graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1958. John attended Villanova School of Law and graduated in 1961. He married his wife Concetta in 1964, and they recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

John practiced law in Lancaster from 1962 through 2020. He initially had his own solo law practice, and then formed Xakellis, Perezous & Mongiovi which later became Xakellis, Mongiovi & Reese. He formed his own firm where his son Michael currently practices, now known as Mongiovi Law. John was of the Roman Catholic faith and was an early member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly in one of his favorite places, Avalon, New Jersey.

John was a fierce, impassioned advocate for his clients. He tirelessly advocated for those who most needed representation. He epitomized the values of service and collegiality with his colleagues. He was respected throughout the Lancaster legal community, and colleagues often tell stories about John's zealous advocacy in the courtroom. John had a passion for many things in addition to the law; he was an avid hobbyist who loved to create and repair things. In the early 1980s, he envisioned and built a cabin in the woods where he spent weekends with his family. He also enjoyed mastering the challenges of computers. When personal computers were first introduced John was quick to conceptualize their application to the legal field.

John is survived by his wife Concetta, and his three children, Michael Mongiovi (Theresa), Mary Mongiovi Sponaugle (Thomas), both of Lancaster, and Vincent Mongiovi (Elizabeth), of West Chester, PA. Also surviving are John's seven grandchildren, Sophia, Kaitlyn, Marissa, Benjamin, Juliana, Anna, and Alexander. John was predeceased by his brothers Paul in 2006, and Frank in 2014.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, at 3110 Lititz Pike. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating John's life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster.
