IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Frederick
Cathey
January 12, 2026
John Frederick Cathey, age 79, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 12, 2026. Born in Sanford, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Frederick and Charlotte (McNair) Cathey.
John moved to the Lancaster area in 1970, and it was here that he began a fulfilling career as a mechanical engineer. Starting with Armstrong World Industries and Hershey Foods, he later joined R.R. Donnelley, in 1980. His dedication and passion for his work were evident, and he proudly served the company for 42 years until his retirement.
Beyond his professional life, John was deeply involved in his community, dedicating several decades to mentoring young minds as a Boy Scout Troop Leader for Lititz Troops 160 and 154. He was also an avid runner, participating in numerous races during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
A man of many passions, John had a love for old British cars and was an enthusiastic musician. He could often be found playing the banjo and guitar, with a special fondness for Bluegrass music and the talents of James Taylor. John enjoyed relaxing and watching college football, especially NC State (his Alma Mater). Go Pack! The beauty of the beach and the tranquility of the mountains brought him joy, and he cherished his trips back to North Carolina to visit family.
John is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Cathey of Landisville; his children: Greg Cathey of Lititz and Robin Harnish (wife of Tom) of Lancaster and one brother: Alexander "Alec" Cathey of North Carolina.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice and Community Care, https://www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org/in-honor-in-memory-gifts/ .
