Jere D. Stabley in his ninety-eighth year passed away peacefully on Sunday March 9, 2025, at Hospice of Lancaster County.
Jere was born in York, PA to the late Guy and Isabella (Benson) Stabley.
Jere served our country with honor and distinction, joining the U.S. Navy in August 1945 and serving until September 1948. He served on the U.S.S. Spokane, which after World War II provided humanitarian aid to countries including the Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland, Norway and Denmark.
Following his military service, Jere attended DeVry University in Chicago, Illinois where he majored in engineering. In 1949, Jere met Irene Kuszyuski; the two were married on August 12, 1950, in Chicago.
Soon after marrying, Jere and Irene relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to begin their life together. While raising a family, Jere worked for RCA as an application engineer for thirty years. He traveled the world working in the company's tubes and fusion program. He was a critical member of the team that worked on the first microwave oven and after retirement continued as a consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratories and Fermilab in New Mexico.
Jere lived a long and wonderful life filled with friends and family. In retirement he could often be found on a golf course. He was an excellent golfer who played with the "Parsomemore" group at Overlook Golf Course and had multiple hole in ones; the 7th one at age 91 playing golf with his daughter on her birthday.
As an incredibly friendly, social and kind individual, he loved engaging in conversation and giving to local charities and causes that helped individuals in need. Jere was one of the original founding members of the Gatehouse in Lititz which continues to support people who are working to maintain sobriety after rehab.
In his later years he lived at Brethren Village where he was involved in many activities and was always seeking new friendships and meaningful connections with others. His signature red cap was a symbol of his boundless energy and kind heart. For many years Jere was a member of Grandview Church where he enjoyed socializing with friends and attending Sunday school.
Jere also enjoyed traveling and taking family vacations. Every winter Jere and Irene would spend several weeks at the Villages in Florida to enjoy golf and spend time with friends and family. Throughout the years Jere's entire family took multiple summer vacations together to various destinations, such as Wildwood Crest, NJ and Deep Creek Lake, MD.
Jere is survived by three children: Nancy, wife of Dennis Balmer of Lititz, PA, Linda, wife of the late Timothy Landis of Lititz, PA, David, husband of Deobrah Stabley of Muncy, PA; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and his beloved companion, Sue Scala. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene Stabley and younger sister Doris Labarr.
Beyond the numerous contributions and achievements he was a dedicated father and grandfather who always put his family first. He was the heart and foundation of our family and he will be deeply missed.
Jere's family would like to thank the staff at Hospice for their dedicated care during his time as a patient.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM on April 5, 2025 at Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, PA 17601. Family and friends will be received from 10AM until the time of service. Contributions may be made in Jere's memory to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604 or Milagro House 941 Wheatland Avenue Suite 205, Lancaster, PA 17603.
