Obituary

Jean Renaud de Vitry died Saturday, May 15 th , at Saint Anne's Retirement Home in Columbia, PA.  Born on October 20, 1925 in Saint Loubes, Gironde, France, Renaud arrived in the United States on December 8 th , 1941, settling in Bainbridge, Pennsylvania with his parents and six siblings. He served as a medic in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged on December 7, 1946, coming home to marry Elizabeth Anne Hankins in 1947. Together they had eight children: Sheila, Renaud Jr., Christopher, Robert, Alan, Malachi, Pierre, and James, all living. Through a second marriage to Louise Heisey Good, three stepdaughters also survive him: Barbara, Patricia, and Margaret. A master cabinetmaker by trade, Renaud became well known in several states for his excellent craftsmanship and hand-tooled furniture. He had apprenticed in France, making wooden caskets for a local carpenter. To the end of his life, he was happiest when he was in his shop, working with his beloved hardwoods. He was still making meticulous dovetail joints by hand when in his 80's.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Mennonite Home Chapel 1520 Harrisburg Pike Lancaster, Pa. 17601 at 11 a.m. with Msgr. Richard Onwuanibe as Celebrant. Family and friends will be received before the service at Mennonite Home from 10 a.m.-11a.m. Interment will be at Bainbridge Cemetery at 2 p.m.
