James H. Ziogas, 94, of Elizabethtown, PA, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mouzaki, Greece he was the son of the late Harry and Vasilike (Papaioannou) Ziogas. He was the loving husband of Helen (Papadakis) Ziogas with whom he shared over 59 years of marriage.
He and his mother immigrated to the USA on July 15, 1939, when he was 9 years old and settled in Tamaqua, PA. Jim went onto graduate in 1949 from Tamaqua High School. He graduated in 1953 from Franklin and Marshall with degrees in Economics and History. During his undergraduate college years, he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Delta Kappa fraternities. He furthered his education with classes at Bucknell University and received a Master's degree in Education from Temple University. Jim taught social studies from 1959 till his retirement in 1992 at Elizabethtown Area School District. Many of his previous students have kept in contact with him.
Jim was a member of the Elizabethtown Lion's Club where he served as president. He was a member of the EAEA where he served as president and was also a member of the PSEA and NEA.
He was a longtime member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where he taught Sunday School, was a past president of Parish council, served faithfully as an usher and greeter, and participated in the annual church food bazaar. Jim was a devoted, life- long member of AHEPA where he served as vice president and secretary for many years.
Jim proudly served in the US Army in Germany during the European Theatre from 1953-1955.
Besides spending time with his family which he loved, Jim's hobbies included stamp collecting, reading, and gardening. In particular he enjoyed raising dahlias for over 50 years and shared bouquets with friends and family.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by his children: Antonia Ziogas and Harry Ziogas both of Elizabethtown and Melissa Jones of Lancaster. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Patrick Jones, Eleni Lindberg, wife of Keaton Lindberg, and Katherine Jones. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Michael P. Jones.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave, Lancaster, PA 17603. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6-8PM at the church with a Trisagion Service at 7PM. The second viewing will be from 10-11AM on Saturday at the church. Interment will follow in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's memory may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, www.annunciationorthodox.org .
