Obituary

James A. Smith, Jr., 95, formerly of East Petersburg, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Helen E. Emich Smith, who passed away in 1995. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late James A. and Katharine Flickinger Smith.

Jim had retired in 1982, after 40 years of combined service with Armstrong Cork Company and the Kerr Glass Co., where he had been sales manager and worked in marketing.

A graduate of Lancaster Boys High School, he attended Lafayette College prior to World War II, and then enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving in the Field Artillery in the Pacific Theater in the invasion of Okinawa, the battle on the Ryukyus Islands and in China at the end of the war. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Lancaster and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1947. He was a member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church.

Jim loved to golf, was a former member of the Conestoga Country Club, and enjoyed sports of all kinds, particularly football. He enjoyed traveling, and was a former member of the East Petersburg Rotary and had also served on the East Petersburg Borough Council.

He is survived by his children: Susan K. married to Richard Wenger of Manheim, James A. III married to Susan Smith of Exton, Scott B. married to Rhonda Smith Benson, NC, Connie D. married to Jeffrey Policicchio of Greenville, SC, Barbara A. Hartman of Lancaster, and D. Bradley married to Kay Smith of Plano, TX; 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and his brother, Richard B. Smith of Landisville. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Norman, and his brother, Thomas B. Smith.

Friends will be received on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 930-1030AM at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603, with the Funeral Service to follow at 1030AM. Private interment in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Jim's memory to the Building Fund of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church at the above address.
