James K. Mitchell, Jr., 85, of Moravian Manor, Lititz, PA passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Colonel James K. Mitchell, Sr. and Eleanor (Moore). He was preceded in death by his second wife, Jeanne (Gouin) Drouin Mitchell on July 8, 2015 and his first wife, Jeanne Borden Mitchell, on October 21, 2001. Jim graduated from Williams College in 1952, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in physics. He served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years which included service in the Vietnam War. He earned a Master of Science degree in geodesy from Ohio State University in 1964. In preparation for his civilian career, he earned a certificate in accounting from Bentley College in 1973 and became a certified public accountant. He served the State of New Hampshire as a legislative budget analyst, retiring from the state in 1995. Jim was an active member of the Church of the Transfiguration in Derry, NH from 1971-2008. He sang in the choir, served as Junior Warden, was a member of the Vestry and several pastoral search committees. He also completed the program of Theological Education by Extension Education for Ministry provided by the School of Theology, the University of the South in 2001. He also was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Salem, NH from 2008 to 2012. He was an avid reader and bridge player. He traveled extensively in the U.S. and throughout the world, visiting or living in 48 states and 25 countries. He was very active in the NH Democratic party and ran for state representative in a district that had not elected a Democrat in 100 years. He loved music, especially treasuring jazz and big band melodies. He thoroughly enjoyed live theater, both plays and musicals. He is survived by eight loving children and stepchildren: The Rev. Kathleen M. Rhyne, wife of G. William Rhyne, Jr. of Lancaster, PA, James K. Mitchell III, husband of Yon Surghito, of Secaucus, NJ, Thomas G. Mitchell, of Lansdale, PA, Donald M. Mitchell, of Cambridge, MA, James Drouin and his wife Kathy, Timothy Drouin, Julie Hickey and her husband James of Chelmsford, MA, Sue Drouin of Salem, NH. He was blessed with eight grandchildren: Jaime, Ashlee, wife of James Woodsom, Jr. Cory, Ashley, Tyler, Kelly, Emma and Abby, and two great-grandchildren, Devin and Jace.
LANCASTER, PA SERVICE INFORMATION Family and friends in the Pennsylvania area are invited to a memorial service Friday, December 18, 2015 at 10AM officiated by Chaplain Rich Thierolf followed by a luncheon from 11AM to 1PM at the Moravian Manor Chapel 300 West Lemon Street Lititz, PA 17543. Family will be available to meet friends, family and staff from 9AM to 10AM before the service. Interment will be on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 10AM in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery 110 Daniel Webster Highway Boscawen, NH 03303.
NEW HAMPSHIRE SERVICE INFORMATION Family and friends are invited to a memorial service officiated by the Reverends Carolyn Stevenson and Susan Minasian at 4PM on December 20, 2015 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home 214 Main Street Salem, NH 03079. Family will be available to meet friends and family from 3PM to 4PM before the service or join the family for a buffet dinner at the Tuscan Kitchen 62 Main Street Salem, NH 03079 directly after the service. A jazz ensemble will play in honor of Jim's love of jazz music. RSVP for dinner only to Kathie Mitchell Rhyne at kmrhyne@aol.com. Interment will be on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 10AM in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery 110 Daniel Webster Highway Boscawen, NH 03303.
