Obituary

Retired USAF MSgt James Louis Caldwell, 78, of Lancaster passed away after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at home. He was the husband of Bernadette "Bonnie" (Friel) Caldwell to whom he was married for 34 years. Born in Bolivar, PA he was a son of the late Charles and Helen (Durand) Stover and was adopted and raised by his parents the late John and Ruth Caldwell. Jim graduated with his bachelor's degree in education from Clarion University and taught leadership school for several years at Cannon AFB in New Mexico and served during the Vietnam War and retired with the rank of MSgt from the US Air Force in 1977. He was an avid reader, big game hunter, was very intelligent and loved children. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and built his log home where they lived for 18 years in Crawford County, PA. He was a Phillies fan and a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 3rd degree Knights of Columbus #867 Lancaster, Big Brothers and served on the board of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Surviving in addition to his wife Bonnie are three children Juli Bovard (Paul), Jamie Romine (Tom), Kelly Scott Caldwell; three step-children Gary Millay (Michelle), Leslie Bosick, Jeffrey Millay (Shannon); nine grandchildren James Geibel, Jessica Bovard, Andrew Millay, Jackie Bosick, Sarah & Spencer Millay, Whitni Henry, Laci Romine and Tawni Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren; one brother Robert Caldwell (Gwen); three sister-in-law's Loretta Caldwell, Geri Kendro (Nick) and Rita Lee (Ron) and several special nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by a brother Richard Caldwell. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 10:30AM from St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd. Lancaster, PA 17601 with Fr. Daniel Powell as celebrant. Interment will be held privately. A closed casket visitation will be held from 8:30AM until the time of his mass at the church. Following his funeral mass at the church military honors will be rendered by the Red Rose Honor Guard and Vet 21 Salute. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Dr. P.O. Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604 in his memory. Jim's family would like to thank the staff from Hospice & Community Care for the wonderful care Jim received these past 6 months along with the staff from St. John Neumann for their support as well. Jim enjoyed all the staff that visited him.
