Herman S. Butz, so beloved by his family, died 2/14/14 at age 93 after a brief illness. The son of the late Harry H. and Emma K.(Weimer) Butz, he is survived by his wife of 67 yrs, Gloria M., a sister, Sr. Miriam H, Dallas, PA and his children, Sylvia M. Schaller (Donald), Furlong, PA; Robert W. (Gayle), Gore, VA; Mark A.(Susie), Abilene, TX; Marie T. Kinsinger (Dennis), Mt. Joy, PA; George P. (Renee), Deer Park, WA; Eileen R. Hostetler (Doug), Strasburg, PA as well as 17 grandchildren, 20+ great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Harry, Vincent, Victor and Norman and 4 sisters, Rita Hebbe, Grace Delp, Helen Butz and Gertrude Kelly.
Born and raised on 'Cabbage Hill', he was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a 1938 graduate of Lancaster Catholic HS and a 46 yr. employee of Armstrong World Industries. He was active as a parish usher, Board Membership on St. Joseph's Athletic/Social Club, Knights of Columbus (#867) and St. Joseph's Bowling League. He was also selected as the 'Outstanding Man of the Year' by the St. Joseph's Club (1965) and cited as 'Outstanding Christian Father' by the Club (2012).
He was proud to be a WWII Veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in the Burma/China/India Theater. After retiring from Armstrong in 1986, he enjoyed his post-retirement years immensely and stayed active with parish activities, family get-togethers, travel, and weekly poker games.
He will be greatly missed by his family and broad network of friends including his weekly poker group, his longtime friends at Central Market, the staff at Hershey Farms restaurant and his fellow parishioners. His focus on family, generosity of spirit and unique, memorable sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him, and will be the core of his ongoing legacy. He always had a smile, a joke and a hug ready. The family wishes to extend appreciation to the staff of Southeastern Home Health Services, LGH, and the Mount Joy Hospice for their kindness and excellent care.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 19, 2013 from 9:30-11AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA 17603, with the Mass to follow at 11AM. Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church at the above address.
