Herbert J. Hohenwarter, 89, of Willow Street, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster Essa Flory Center. He was born and raised in Lancaster City on Cabbage Hill by his late parents, George L. and Lucy (Judith) Hohenwarter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet (Probst) Hohenwarter, in 1993.
Growing up in a German neighborhood, he attended St. Joseph's School, and was a lifelong and loyal member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He attended Lancaster Catholic High School.
Herb was a Veteran of WWII with the US Army and was stationed in Trinidad.
Herb was a master carpenter, and retired from Turner Construction Company after 35 years. He worked on several well known projects, including the local RCA plant, Washington D.C.'s Ronald Reagan Airport, and the Franklin Plaza Hotel in Philadelphia.
Herb enjoyed roller skating, dancing, playing the piano, collecting things, was an antiques enthusiast, and learned how to ski at the age of 71. He enjoyed attending family gatherings.
He is survived by six children: Judy H. Schaeffer of Willow Street; David L. Hohenwarter of Pylesville, MD; Jere L. Hohenwarter of Woodland, CA; Jyl, wife of H. Richard Snyder, of Lancaster; Kelly of Lancaster; Nancy, wife of Clifford Snyder, of Lancaster; also by 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a sister, Kathleen Galie, of Landisville. He was preceded in death by six brothers: George, Vincent, Edward, Bernard, Paul, and Thomas and three sisters: Lucy, Mary, and Germaine.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Msgr. Thomas H. Smith as Celebrant. Viewings will be on Thursday from 7-9pm at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA and again at the church from 9-10am on Friday. Final farewell and interment will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.
