Obituary

Henry Corneau Beck, 95, died on August 18, 2009 at the Hospice Center in Lancaster, PA.  He was born on September 30, 1913 to Harry E. and Anne Wilsdon Cook Beck of Philadelphia.

Mr. Beck was a 1932 graduate of the Wm. Penn Charter School in Germantown, a member of the 1936 class at Haverford College and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University.

After 38 years at Sun Oil Co., where he had several patents, Mr Beck worked 20 years as a Senior Project Engineer at the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, retiring in 1998 at the age of 85.

Mr. Beck was involved in numerous service and philanthropic organizations.  He was a long-time active member of Christ Church, Media; a founding member of the American Committee for KEEP in Japan; a President, Paul Harris and Guy Gundaker Fellow at Rotary Club; a President of the Philadelphia Section and 72 year member of the American Chemical Society, a supporter of the Church Farm School in Paoli; a member of the Union League in Philadelphia; a Master Mason in the Springfield-Hanby Lodge No. 767; and a Lt. Col. in the Civil Air Patrol with 48 years of service.

Traveling was a passion.  For his 80th birthday he decided to go around the world with Semester at Sea, on a ship filled with college students.  He loved it !

For 64 years Mr. Beck lived in Wallingford, then moved to Millersville 4 years ago.

Mr. Beck was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Lee Sowden Beck, and two brothers, Blakely Harrison and Kenneth Antrim Beck.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Beck Bysshe and his son-in-law Robert M. Bysshe of FL and NH, four grandchildren, Geoffrey L., R.Thomas, Peter L., Karyn Vella and six great-grandchildren.   He is also survived by his companion, Darlene Bentley of Lancaster.

Friends and Family will be received on Friday, August 21, 2009, from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm  in the chapel at Arlington Cemetery,2900 State Road, Drexel Hill, PA. The telephone number is 610-259-5800. There will be a Masonic Service at 1:25 pm preceding the Funeral service at 1:30 pm.
