Harold E. "Shimpy" Shimp, 76, of Conestoga, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was the son of the late Harold and Gertrude (McCauley) Shimp, and the husband of Shirley A. (Richer) Shimp with whom he celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary in November.
Shimpy worked from 1956-1959 at J. Lloyd Hollinger Butcher Shop, then Darmstetter's Department Store from 1959-1973. From 1973 to 1994 he owned and ran Shimp's Electronics in Millersville, then from 1994-2009 he worked at Kline's RV's in Mountville.
Shimpy was a 1955 graduate of Penn Manor High School where he played baseball for the Comets. During this time he also played baseball in the City Legion League and the Central and County Leagues. In their early years of marriage, Shimpy and Shirley were quite the dancers and roller skaters. He was a member of the LANCO Lodge Rod & Gun Club of Huntington, PA – Raystown Lake since 1959. Shimpy has been a Penn State Football fan and season ticket holder for over 40 years. From 1961-1973, Shimpy played bass guitar and sang lead vocal for his band, the Crickets and played many venues all over Central, PA and played at the Thursday night get together at Valentino's Café. He was an avid bowler, bowling for the Kline's Team at Leisure Lanes and also enjoyed playing golf. Shimpy was a member of the Conestoga Country Club from 1980-1994 and most recently enjoyed playing golf with the Columbia Elks members.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, Shimpy is survived by 2 daughters, Debra A. Dunton, wife of Michael, Tannersville, PA and Kimberly M. Stively, wife of Robert, Lititz, PA; 2 granddaughters, Brandy M. Orama and Shelly Yoder; a great-granddaughter, Jada Orama; a brother, Thomas A. Shimp, husband of Cindy, Holtwood, PA, niece, Kelly Rickenbach, and great-niece, Mattie.
Funeral Services for Shimpy will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Wilmer Martin officiating. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Shimpy's memory to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Lancaster County American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
