Harold E. Matroni, 96, of Lancaster passed away Friday, December 29, 2023. Born in Lancaster, PA he was the son of the late Leonard T. and Margaret L. (Hacker) Matroni. He was the loving husband of the late Antoinette L. Matroni who passed away in 1993.
He worked at the former Hamilton Watch Co. in the machine shop, and later went on to work at the Miller Optical Co. before retiring in 1989.
Harold was a senior chief machinists mate in the US Navy, and veteran of WWII, Korean Conflict, and the early days of Vietnam, serving aboard the USS Gendreau DE-639, USS Everett F. Larson DD-830, USS Coral Sea CVA-43, USS Gyatt DD712/DDG-1, USS Lloyd Thomas DD-764, and USS Mars AFS-1, spending 18 years of a 20-year career at sea. He was a "True Tin Can Sailor" at heart, and loved sharing his stories with others.
Harold was a member of the Tin Can Sailors Association, US Navy Destroyer Veterans; The Fleet Reserve Association; The American Legion; The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); The Knights of Columbus; and served as past president of the Travelors Protective Association, Post D of Lancaster, PA.
He is survived by two sons, Harold J. Matroni, Sr., husband of Jacalyn of Columbia, PA, Leonard T. Matroni of Lancaster, PA. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Harold, Jr., Angelina (Dan), two great-grandchildren, Evan, and Jonah; siblings, Thomas J. Matroni husband of Carol of East Petersburg and Margaret E. Matroni of Neffsville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Matroni.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. Interment will follow in St. Josephs New Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends will be received from 10-11AM at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harold's memory may be made to the church at the above address or to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
