H. Edward Smith, 89, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Hospice & Community Care, Mt. Joy following a lengthy illness. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Lawrence A. and Dorothy L. (DeVol) Smith. Ed was the faithful and loving husband of Beverly A. (Foote) Smith with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage on January 20. Ed proudly served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. Returning to Kenosha, he began employment as Administrative Manager for Kenosha Auto Transport and managed offices in Kenosha, Baltimore, MD, Raytown, Mo, and Placentia, Ca. When KAT created the Boat Haul Division to service The Trojan Boat Company's Lancaster Plant, Ed was named manager of KAT's new Lancaster office. After the Boat Haul Division was succeeded by World Marine Transport, Ed moved to Jacksonville, FL, to manage the office there. He retired in 1996, returning to Lancaster A devout Catholic, Ed was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lancaster and was very involved in the community. He served as past president of St. Anne's Youth Activity Association. In 1948, at the age of 18, he joined the Knights of Columbus and has been a member ever since. Locally, he belonged to the Knights of Columbus Lancaster Council #867, where he served as the Past Grand Knight and was also a member of the Knights' 4th Degree, Santa Maria Assembly. He was a charter member of the Lancaster Northside Cosmopolitan Club and member of the American Legion Post #34. Ed was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting in Centre County and loved both salt-water and freshwater fishing. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his six children: Stephanie A., wife of Samuel Bolton, Jr., of Myerstown; Steven E. Smith, husband of Donna, of Watsontown, PA; Kelly M., wife of David Hill Byrne, of Lancaster; David P. Smith, husband of Anna, of Lancaster; Brian T. Smith, husband of Christina, of Willow Street; and Paul A. Smith, companion of Cathie Russell, of Lancaster. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by a grandson, Andy Bolton, his brother, William Smith, and sister, Beverly Tredup. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 6PM to 7:30PM, with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:30PM on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St. Lancaster, PA 17602, with the Rev. Lawrence W. Sherdel, as Celebrant. Private interment, with military honors, will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Ed's memory be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.
