Obituary

Gus N. Karpouzis, 86, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 7, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at York Hospital. Born in the Village of Pyli, Island of Kos, Greece, he was the son of the late Domnitsa (Papademetriou) and Nicholas A. Karpouzis.

Capt. Gus happily resided with his godchildren, Dr. Spencer and Andrea Phillips and their children for the past 14 years.

He attended J.P. McCaskey High School class of 1943. He was a star football and basketball player, lettering in varsity as a 9 th grader.

Capt. Gus served his country with the US Air Force and was a Veteran of WWII.

He was the former owner of The Bamboo Bar 1955-1965 and co-owner of The Fulton Restaurant 1946-1955.

He established Capt. Gus's Steak Shop in 1968 and has owned and operated the family business along with his children Phyllis Rothweiler and Nick G. Karpouzis since it was founded. He was best known for serving his famous cheese steaks in Lancaster. He was known for his ring tricks, fish stories, treating kids with candy, sharing fruits and vegetables from his Amish and Mennonite friends' farms.

Capt. Gus was a lifetime member, former parish council member, and contributor to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. He routinely donated every year to the Greek Bazaar providing vegetables and was involved in different aspects of the Bazaar. He was member of the Pan-Coan Society Hippocrates, and Sons of Pericles, The Philoptochos Society.

Capt. Gus was an avid sports fan, especially the sport of boxing and sponsored annually the t-shirts Golden Glove Boxers.

He loved fishing, boating, Greek music, Greek dancing, and spending time with his family. His famous quote that represented Capt.'s beliefs was "the love of the family is the wealth of the family".

He is survived by two children; a daughter, Phyllis Karpouzis Rothweiler, wife of Brian, of Lancaster, Nick G. Karpouzis, companion of Jenn Traup, of Lancaster, three grandchildren, Brandon, Shayne, and Brittany Rothweiler, a sister, Barbara Karpouzis Valavanes, of Lancaster, niece and goddaughter, Andrea V., wife of Dr. Spencer D. Phillips. Their children, Christina, fiancé of Eric Mattson, Andrew and Kelly Konstantina were like grandchildren to him. He will be greatly missed by his nieces, Dore Valavanes, Nitsa Val Kambouroglos, wife of Kosta, Janie, wife of Bob Marrow, Phyllis, wife of Dr. Umberto DeRienzo, of Pittsburgh, Ramona, wife of Dr. Stephen Perryman, of Pittsburgh, nephew, Andrew S. Kusuplos, of Manheim, great nieces and nephews, Nicolas, Varah, Michael, Blanca, Caroline, and Gerardo. His godchildren held a special place in his heart.

Capt. Gus was preceded in death by brother, Andrew Karpouzis and a sister, Nena K. Valavanes, both in 2011.

Funeral Services for Capt. Gus will be on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave Lancaster, PA 17603 with The Rev. Alex Goussetis and Rev. Alex Veronis officiating. A viewing will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 from 4-9PM and again on Wednesday 9:00-10:30AM at the church. Trisagion Service will be at 7pm Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park with Military Honors rendered by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.
