Grace L. Hackman, 93, formerly of Lancaster, died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at The Mennonite Home. Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Musser C. and Esther Foose Landis.
Grace attended Millersville State Teacher's College for three years before World War II. During the war she worked for Hamilton Watch in the war effort. Her husband Merle Long was tragically killed in the war. After the war Grace married Robert R. Hackman and she returned to Millersville to complete her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Grace and Bob enjoyed 58 years of marriage before his death in 2006.
For 20 years Grace taught at Smoketown Elementary. She was a member of Willow Street United Church of Christ for over 60 years, and recently worshiped at The Mennonite Home Chapel. Grace and Bob enjoyed traveling in their RV, especially their trip to Alaska, as well as winters in Florida and Arizona. Grace also liked to read and spend time with her family and friends.
Grace is survived by her daughter Wanda Beth Hackman and her sister Patricia LeFever, both of Lancaster. She was preceded by her young son Robert R. Hackman, Jr. in 1954, and her siblings, Doris Ensminger, Charles Landis, Frank Landis, Stanley Landis, Nancy Conrad and Musser F. Landis.
Grace's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Rosevue 2, Boyers Run, Eshelman Run and the Chaplains at The Mennonite Home for the loving care they provided to her.
The Funeral will take place 11 AM Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA , with Rev. Ron Bohannon officiating. Viewings will be held 6-8 PM on Wednesday and 10-11 AM on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park. In Lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
