Gerald Oliver Harrison was born at home in Chester County, PA to the late Walter H. and Cordelia (Whetts) Harrison on December 17, 1935. He was the fourth child born to this union. Gerald married the Mary Elizabeth Whedbee with whom he celebrated more than 36 years of marriage prior her death on December 28, 2001.
After graduating from J. P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster, PA, Gerald continued his education at Morgan State College (now University) receiving a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education in 1959. While at Morgan, Gerald became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on December 14, 1956. Gerald went on to serve in the United States Army as a Parts Clerk Specialist in the 3rd Armor Division, 33rd Heavy Tank Battalion in Germany. Later, he would continue his education by earning a Master of Education degree in Special education from Millersville University.
Gerald was an accomplished athlete. In high school, he played football and was on the team that won the Central PA League Championship in 1952. He also ran track in high school, which culminated with him setting a new district record in the 880-yard dash in 1954. His track career continued at Morgan State where he ran on a relay team that won many contests across the country. As a result of his athletic prowess, Gerald was named to the following Halls of Fame: Morgan State University (1993), J. P. McCaskey High School (2005) and Thaddeus Stevens College (2009)
Education and Track & Field were the cornerstones of Gerald's professional career. He worked in multiple school districts and finished his career with a 20-year tenure at Thaddeus Stevens where he made a positive impact on many fine athletes and students as a coach, counselor, mentor and study skills instructor. Gerald also served as a Democratic Committeeman, a member of the Lancaster Recreation Board of Directors and on Lancaster City Council.
In addition to his wife and parents, Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Lamont; a brother, Walter H. Jr. and two sisters, Helen Harrison and Laura Holman.
Gerald is survived by his granddaughter, Monye Hurdle (Cornelius), whom he raised; two grandsons, Lamont and Jimil Harrison; one sister, Florence Garnett; sister-in-law, Madeline Anderson; daughter-in law, Sandra Pigford; 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Parkesburg United Methodist Church, 411 Main Street, Parkesburg, PA 19365. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Morgan Bear Club at Morgan State University.
