Gerald "Jerry" E. McOmber, 81, of Brethren Village, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. He was the husband of Joann Imler McOmber, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage this past June 22nd. Born in Van Wert County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Clyde L. and Gladys Bruckart McOmber. Jerry was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH where he received his Naval Commission in 1957. While there, he was a member of NROTC and the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After receiving his wings in single and multi-engine aircraft at NAS Pensacola in 1957, he was qualified in Lighter-Than-Air craft in NAS Glynco, GA. He was one of the last Navy blimp pilots flying at NAS Lakehurst NJ. In 1977, as a Commander, he retired from the Naval Reserves. After working with the 3M Company for several years, he worked as a self-employed sales representative. He then, with his wife Joann, became owners of United Window Grilles in Manheim for 20 years, until his retirement in 1994. Jerry was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. He was the past president and served on the board of directors of the Lancaster Chapter of the Military Officers Assn. of America. In addition to his wife, Joann, he is survived by his children: Ann McOmber of Lancaster, Alan married to Sharon McOmber of Mt. Joy; his two grandchildren Shannon and Sarah McOmber; his two great grandchildren, Kaylee and Logan and by his brothers, Dean C. of Van Wert, OH and the Rev. Dr. William McOmber of St. Marys,OH. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dale R. and Donald B. McOmber. Friends will be received on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 10-11AM at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Rd., Lancaster, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 11AM, the Rev. Dr. Ann Osborne officiating. Interment to follow in the church's memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Jerry's memory to the Lancaster Chapter MOAA Scholarship Fund, Box 5031, Lancaster, PA 17606-5031.
