Obituary

George S. Schwartz, 81, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at his home. He was the son of the late Dr. Grover C. Schwartz and Ethel B. (Colahan) Schwartz and was married to Helen L. (Loercher) Schwartz for 58 years. Mr. Schwartz graduated from J. P. McCaskey High School and attended Franklin and Marshall College. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the USS Heyliger, a destroyer escort, during the Korean War.. George was active in the labor movement, having served as president of his local union of the United Steelworkers of America for 19 consecutive years and retired as a staff representative for Council 90 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in 1992. Mr. Schwartz was also active in the community. He served on the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority and the Health Resources Planning and Development Board. He was twice a Democratic candidate for Lancaster City Council and ran for Lancaster County Commissioner. Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church and the Sweetwood Hunting Camp. In addition to his wife, Helen, George is survived by 3 children, Valory L., wife of Stephen G. Slymon, of Pittsfield, Maine, Craig S., husband of Sandra E. Schwartz, of Lancaster, and Gretchen A. Schwartz, of Lancaster; 4 grandchildren, Tyler, husband of Jennifer, Justin, Caroline, and Hillary; and 2 great-grandchildren, Teresa and Lilah. Friends will be received from 2-3PM on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with the Funeral Service to follow at 3PM. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
