Obituary

George A. Resh left this earth, but not our hearts on December 31, 2023. He was deeply loved and will live on through all of us who loved him. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Claressa Hilton Resh. In addition he is survived by his 3 daughters and their spouses: Sharon and Ernie Forni, Kristan and Dave Smith, and Susan and Bill Riley. He also cared deeply for and enjoyed his 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

George was born August 24, 1932 in Lancaster. He was the son of Charles W. Resh and Vera Adams Beam. George graduated from Manheim Township HS where he was a member of the 1950 State Champion Track Team and set a district record in the 200 yard low hurdles. After graduation from Penn State University, he entered active duty in the US Air Force as a pilot. His service and love of flying continued for 30 years, many of them as a member of the Active Air Force Reserves, serving at both Willow Grove Naval Air Station and later Dover Air Force Base. He retired from the military as a C5 pilot and Vice Wing Commander of the 512th Military Airlift Wing at Dover. After retirement he stayed connected to the Air Force as an Admissions Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. He was also a member of MOAA and the Red Rose Honor Guard.

George's other profession and passion was teaching and coaching. He taught in the School District of Lancaster at Washington Elementary, Jackson Middle School (formerly Edward Hand) and finally, McCaskey HS where he taught Social Studies, local history and a special extra credit course in aviation (complete with a flight simulator). He coached middle and HS track. He also founded and was active in the AFS club. He was presented with the Charles Lohin Friend of McCaskey award and elected to the McCaskey Athletic Hall of Fame.

Because George wasn't a fan of free time, he also served several terms on the Hempfield School Board. He was a PIAA track official after retiring and visited schools with the Adopt a Vet program to talk about his military service and to teach students that "freedom isn't free". He enjoyed activities at their cottage in Mt Gretna and served on the Camp Meeting Board there.
