Obituary

Gary Johnson, 88, of Lititz, passed away peacefully and with his wife by his side on May 11, 2026. Born in Lake City, IA, he was the son of the late Wayne “Short” Johnson and LaVonne (Snyder) Johnson. He was married almost 61 years to his beloved, Dixie C. (Stewart) Johnson.

Gary obtained his master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music and had an exceptional career in music. He was a talented musician, excelling on the French horn, and was a member of the orchestra for Phantom of the Opera, retiring in 2000. Over the years he also participated in over 30 shows on Broadway and Jones Beach Theater in Long Island, NY. Many of these were with his wife Dixie as a singer including "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" on Broadway in the first year of their marriage. Gary was also featured in The American Heritage Dictionary, 3rd Edition.

Gary had many passions beyond music, including reading, photography, and his four dogs. He was an active athlete enjoying skiing, biking and running.

In addition to his wife Dixie, Gary is survived by a sister, LaDonna Johnson Temple. He was predeceased by his sister Marilyn Kay Johnson.
